Flood Damage: Walking in a Soggy Wonderland
Mother Nature can turn vicious in a heartbeat, sending down wind and buckets of rain. Rivers rise and swell, and eventually cascade over their banks, rushing toward homes and businesses in a watery onslaught leaving devastation and debris as far as the eye can see. Flood damage is a real threat, no matter where you live. You are never so far away from a river, a creek or other sources of water that you are one hundred percent safe from flood waters. There are other ways for your home to become a flooded nightmare- everybody is just an inch of water away from dealing with flood damage.
The most obvious place that you will notice these damages is the yard. Soggy grass, flooded flowers and dripping daisies are bad enough, but the flood damages will destroy more than just your plants, trees and shrubs. All of your landscape lighting, outdoor furniture and yard equipment will now need to be assessed carefully, repaired if possible or replaced. And while insurance may cover some of these expenses, will it pay for the time that you have spent doing all of this backbreaking labor?
Next, you will notice water in your basement, crawlspace or under your foundation. If you have a blocked mobile home, there would have been enough water to cause dangerous shifting, so have that professionally evaluated before returning to your home. Once you are sure that the home is at least safe, you can assess for how much the cost of flood damage is really involved. Remember that even if the top of your carpets feel dry, the padding or the backing may still be wet, and that must be checked before you allow yourself to be satisfied.
All food products that have come in contact with flood water should be considered contaminated and disposed of. Your family’s health is too important to take the risk of using something that is potentially harmful. All of your children’s toys must be scoured and sterilized before being returned to them; if this is not possible, sadly, the item must go. In the case of toys for infants or children that are not healthy, it is wiser and safer to err on the side of caution and dispose of the toy.
Bleach and other disinfectants should be used, as well as commercial mold killing products for the most seriously flood damaged areas. It may seem like a lot of work, especially in areas that do not look like they need it, but it really is a necessary safety precaution.
